NHS Dental Charge Exemptions

There are many different benefits available, some qualify you for free or reduced cost NHS dental treatment, some do not.  Please take a moment to read the information on NHS dental charge exemptions below.  Making an incorrect claim could result in a £100 penalty.  If after reading this you are still unsure, please ask a member of our Reception team who will be able to assist you.

Your treatment will be free of charge if you are claiming, or included in an award of someone claiming, the following at the start of a course of treatment:

  • are under 18 years old
  • are aged 18 and still in full-time education
  • are pregnant or have had a baby within the past 12 months
  • Income support
  • Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance paid on its own or with contribution based Jobseeker's Allowance.
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance paid on its own or with contribution-based Employment and Support Allowance
  • Pension Credit (Guarantee Credit) paid on its own or with Pension Credit (Savings Credit)
  • Universal Credit
  • are entitled to, or are named on, a valid NHS Tax Credit Exemption Certificate
  • are named on a HC2 or HC2W certificate (an NHS Low Income Scheme certificate)

If you are still unsure it is better to sign as a paying patient, pay for your treatment and obtain a receipt.  If after checking you discover that you are in fact exempt, you can claim a refund by completing an HC5 form, copies of this form are kept at reception but can also be found here.

If you do not bring proof of exemption, you will be asked to pay, and given the receipt and forms to claim the money back.

Patients on the following benefits will have to pay NHS dental charges for their care:

  • contribution based Jobseeker's Allowance paid on its own
  • contribution based Employment and Support Allowance paid on its own
  • Pension Credit (Savings Credit) paid on its own
  • any other benefit paid on its own (such as Disability Living Allowance, Incapacity Benefit, Council Tax Benefit etc..)
